Couple questions on posts

Tried to upload an avatar, but it seems to need to be super-tiny? Any technical advice to get a pic down to appropriate size?

Also, is there an easy way to upload photos to posts rather than linking to a hosted photo elsewhere?

For uploading images, please go to the area below the post, select "Attachments", "Add Files", and then I chose "place inline":
